Main Chute

April 4th 2014

On April 4th 2014 I skied Baldy’s Main chute with my 60 year old dad.  I knew he would love the view and most likely make it down the mountain ok.  We went for it, he insisted on carrying his skis and I took the day to enjoy being a tourist on my home mountain by taking lots of pictures at all the usual locales.  I don’t really remember what the skiing was like because I was so concentrated on documenting the adventure and being at all places at once so as to stop my dad from sliding down the entire chute or carry his skis if that was what it would take for us to make the journey.  Everything went smoothly though and we both lived to tell about it.  He shredded the chute with no problem, even though he has only been skiing for 10 years or so.  I knew he could make the hike; he is an avid hunter and walks off trail routinely throughout the year; I was a little worried about the elevation though.  Baldy tops out at around 11,000’ in elevation, a far cry from where my dad usually skis near Helena, Mt.

Did we really come through that chute?

It was perhaps one of my most memorable days at Alta.  To have the chance to share this with my dad is above words for me.  How wonderful for me to be in a place I love, a place I have been hundreds of days of my life; and to really slow down to enjoy everything I love about this place by sharing it with my dad.

California Summer 2011

A random spot we camped south and east of Tioga Pass

Climbing in Tuolumne Meadows

We did three separate backpacking trips in the Trinity Alps; spending
a total of 14 nights in the backcountry.

Climbed Mt. Shasta 14,192' volcano, then slid on our
butts for some of the way down.

Castle Crags State Park

After working at Alta for the winter, I traveled to California and spent 7 weeks working for the outdoor education company Naturalist at Large. After my work ended I picked up Tim and  we started adventuring.
From June to September we lived in the Venture Van, camped, climbed, hiked, swam in rivers and lakes, read, and enjoyed ourselves in the outdoors. We saw northern California from the redwoods on the coast, Mt. Shasta, Castle Crags, Trinity Alps wilderness, to Bald Mountain Ranch.
